What is a neurologist?

A neurologist is a medical specialist who diagnoses and treats diseases of the nervous system. This incudes the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and peripheral nervous system (nerves and muscles). A neurologist is not a surgeon, and so does not do brain or spine surgery.

What is a neurologic disease?

Neurologic diseases have many possible symptoms, with abnormalities in sensation (numbness, tingling), strength (weakness, clumsiness), movement (stiffness, tremor), balance (vertigo, falling), or mental functioning (dementia). Many of these cannot be diagnosed by ordering a test, but require detailed examination by a trained neurologist.
